Artist Spotlight: Mallrat

Mallrat is an accomplished Australian musician, singer, and rapper hailing from Brisbane. Her music is a fusion of various influences, and she has achieved significant recognition for her compelling sound and lyrical prowess.



Music Career:

  • Mallrat adopted her stage name from the 2012 track "Mallrats (La La La)" by the American punk band the Orwells.

  • Her official debut single, "Suicide Blonde," produced by Tigerilla, was released under the name Mallrat on July 23, 2015.

  • Mallrat's debut EP, "Uninvited," was recorded during her last year of high school and included the single "Suicide Blonde."

  • In 2017, Mallrat performed at Splendour in the Grass, setting the stage for her career to take off. She also signed with Canadian label Nettwerk Records and Australian label Dew Process.

  • The single "Better" was released in October 2017, followed by "UFO" featuring Allday in February 2018, and "Groceries" in June 2018. These tracks were part of her second EP, "In the Sky," released in June 2018.

  • Mallrat's support for Maggie Rogers in Europe on her 'Heard It In A Past Life' World Tour in 2018–2019 further established her presence in the music scene.

  • In August 2019, Mallrat released "Charlie," the lead single from her third EP, "Driving Music," which was released in September 2019.

  • The EP achieved notable success, peaking at number 10 on the ARIA Charts. In January 2020, "Charlie" and "Nobody's Home" featuring Basenji ranked at number 3 and 59, respectively, in the 2019 Triple J Hottest 100.

  • Mallrat continued her streak of successful singles, with "Rockstar" ranking at 13 in the 2020 Triple J Hottest 100.

  • In 2022, Mallrat released her debut studio album, "Butterfly Blue," which achieved a peak chart position of 6 on the ARIA Charts. The album's success showcased her growth as an artist and garnered critical acclaim.

  • In June 2023, she released "Do It Again," a song with New Zealand artist Benee, which serves as the official song of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.


Musical Style: Mallrat's music is a unique blend of influences, including Grimes, Skrillex, Sophie, Courtney Barnett, and Allday, with the latter being her most prominent influence.
